On World Meningitis Day, 5th October, Meningitis Centre Australia (MCA) celebrated their 30th Birthday and launched the Mihali George Kailis Future Fund.
With the theme “Looking back to leap forward” MCA revisited our achievements, heard the real life stories of the devastation Meningitis causes, and looked forward with excitement to our future vision.
MCA is the national peak body for advocacy, awareness, support and action on meningitis, meningococcal, pneumococcal and related diseases such as viral and Hib. For 30 years MCA has been working to educate the community and defeat meningitis in its various forms that have such a devastating impact on Australian lives.
CEO Karen Quick says that meningitis remains one of the most deadly childhood infections since Polio and is still claiming and disabling the lives of many across Australia, particularly children.
"If your child is one of the 300,000 immunised every year against the strains of this disease, you have MCA to thank for that!", she said.
Meningitis is a medical emergency, can develop in a few hours and is deadly. With case numbers currently on the rise and not all strains covered by immunisation, it is essential you know the signs and symptoms so you can seek urgent medical advice and ask the question “could this be meningitis or meningococcal?”.
